Lay of the day
Lay of the day (2.15 Chester) Doctor Fremantle was beaten on his first outing of last year and may just need this run after a layoff stretching back to last year's St Leger. Likely longshot (4.35 Chester) Though a record of one win from 10 starts is hardly impressive, Fivefootnumberone is no slouch and his prominent style of racing and decent draw stand him in good stead. Longest traveller (2.45 Chester) Aidan O'Brien's duo of Golden Sword and Masterofthehorse cannot be underestimated, with slight preference for the latter, who is the mount of stable jockey Johnny Murtagh. Trainer trends (6.40 Wincanton) Paul Nicholls has won five of the last seven runnings of this and saddles2/7 Alfred's Tower this year. A course winner last time, he can strike again. Deja vu (3.35 Goodwood) Kokkokila was second in this race last year on her second run back and with an almost identical preparation this term, she could go one better. Drop in class (5.50 Wetherby) Diklers Oscar was not disgraced when eighth in a Listed bumper at Aintree and having already won in that sph3/7 at the West Yorkshire venue, he can strike on his debut over obstacles. Moving house (7.15 Wincanton) French import Silver Point has his first run over hurdles for Evan Williams and as a Listed Flat winner, is accorded plenty of respect for a yard that can ready them first time. Perfect partners (2004-2009) Richard Hughes has five wins from just 11 rides when riding for Lady Herr4/7 so any support for Kokkokila in the 3.35 at Goodwood must be noted. Top strikers (2004-2009) Jeremy Noseda has a cracking strike- rate at Goodwood and he saddles Maria Nunziata in the 2.00. The Green Desert filly is related to three winners and can conquer her rivals in this contest. Paul Nicholls has a formidable record at Newton Abbot and he saddles Classic Swain in the 4.20. The 4yo benefited from the fitting of blinkers to wi5/7 easily last time and providing the headgear works again, he can strike. It all points to ... (3.35 Goodwood) Kokkokila looks capable of going one better than when second in this race last year. The 5yo ran as though she would improve for the outing when fourth at Yarmouth on her return and off the same mark, she looks capable of making her presence felt. Thursday's Selections
On to stay the trip
Though yet to win over further than 1m,
Staying On has showed he stays 10f and
could prove hard to peg back in the
Huxley Stakes at Chester (2.15).
Walter Swinburn's 4yo found only one
too good over 10f at Royal Ascot last
term and though disappointing after
that, he has bounced back this year.
The Invincible Spirit gelding held off
Unnefer with a typically gutsy effort
last time and could follow up.
Unseen looks best in Vase
Sight Unseen won in the manner of a
very promising horse on his debut at
Newbury and he looks likely to figure
prominently in the Chester Vase (2.45).
Henry Cecil's charge surged clear of
his rivals with a telling kick, and has
seen the form firmly franked since by
two subsequent scorers.
The Sadler's Wells colt has plenty of
stamina in his pedigree so the step up
to 1m4f should suit ideally.
Fareer can fire
Fareer (nap) has yet to finish out of
the frame in four starts and after
finishing a fair third on his return,
he can land the 3.15 at Chester.
Ed Dunlop's colt got off the mark at
the second attempt last term when
winning well at Doncaster and followed
that with a good second at Newmarket.
Off the track for nine months after
that, he returned with a fair third at
Newbury and should come on for the run.
Thursday's selections

2.15 Staying On
2.45 Sight Unseen
3.15 Fareer (nap)

Spots the horses to follow
Chepstow, Tuesday: Dalradian took
second in the 1m handicap, and it
should not be long before he is back in
the winning groove. He stuck to his
task well, going down by just 1¾l, and
his turn may not be far away.
Kempton, Monday: There was much to like
about the debut run of Mohtashem, who
was third in division one of the 1m
maiden. Injury prevented the colt from
racing at two, but he can soon make up
for lost time for Sir Michael Stoute.

Oaks hopes are High
Barry Hills has already tasted Classic
success this season through Ghanaati in
the Guineas and High Heeled could
provide him with victory in the Oaks.
Like Ghanaati, High Heeled's sole
triumph at two came in a Kempton
maiden, but there was plenty to like
about her reappearance win at Newbury.
She saw off some smart colts there,
despite the race not being run to suit,
and 14/1 with Hills for Epsom is fair.

Setback for Overdose
Hungarian sprinting superstar Overdose
has suffered a slight setback in his
preparation for the Temple Stakes.
The unbeaten speedball has developed a
problem with his shoes, but his trainer
Sandor Ribarszki is still hopeful of
making the Group 2 contest on May 23.
He said: "We are hoping to get Overdose
ready but he has a problem with his
shoes, which is causing him pain. We
have put medication on his hooves."

It's not over yet
Sandor Ribarszki believes Overdose will
be hard to beat if he turns up for the
Temple Stakes at Haydock Park.
The trainer said: "He was working very
well until we noticed he was in pain.
He will return on Thursday and there
will hopefully be no more pus left.
"I am hopeful of taking him to Haydock.
We are up against very good sprinters,
but if we can get Overdose 100% ready,
I think he will be very hard to beat."

Four possible for Ascot
The Michael Bell-trained Four Winds may
bid to give The Queen a Royal Ascot
victory in the Hampton Court Stakes.
The Queen's racing manager John Warren
told At The Races: "We are probably
going to duck the Dante. We are looking
at one (conditions race) over a mile on
May 14 at Newmarket.
"It's unlikely he'll be heading towards
the Derby and is much more likely to go
for the Hampton Court at Ascot."

Oxx's Bay can make frame
John Oxx is expecting Baliyana to give
a good account of herself in the Group
3 Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial
at Leopardstown on Sunday.
The trainer said: "She was a little bit
disappointing last year when she was
moved up in class, but she won at
Leopardstown and she likes the track."
Oxx added: "She will run a decent race
but she will have to improve to be in
the frame."

Hidden gets Oaks brief
Hidden Brief goes in search of valuable
black type when she lines up in
tomorrow's Cheshire Oaks at Chester.
The Michael Jarvis-trained daughter of
Barathea steps up to Listed class after
finishing second to the well-regarded
Star Ruby in a 10f Sandown maiden.
Jarvis said: "She has a nice pedigree,
so black type is quite important. She
ran a nice race last time and the
winner appears to be well thought of."

Phil wants fast ground
Connections of the Sir Michael Stoute-
trained Phillipina are hoping the
forecast rain does not materialise
ahead of her Cheshire Oaks bid.
Chris Richardson, managing director for
owners Cheveley Park Stud, said: "She
didn't relish the softish ground last
time, and ground is important to her.
"She is a filly who likes to hear her
hooves rattle. This is obviously an
opportunity to see where we go."
![]()
Rain wouldn't ruin Roses
John Oxx would like to see a drop of
rain for his Cheshire Oaks contender
Roses For The Lady.
The trainer said: "This is an
opportunity to send her over and let
her try to get some black type.
"She's a nice filly and the form of the
maiden race she won at Leopardstown has
worked out quite well. A little ease in
the ground would help her if it turns
out that way."

Derrinstown dozen
Aidan O'Brien provides six of the 12
entries for Sunday's Derrinstown Derby
Trial at Leopardstown.
Fame And Glory is his number one Epsom
contender and could reappear, along
with Black Bear Island, Aristocrat,
Born To Be King, Hail Caesar and Liszt.
John Oxx has entered Mourayan and
Tarankali, while Jim Bolger could also
be doubly represented through Fergus
McIver and Toraidhe.
![]()
Mour set for Leopardstown
John Oxx reports Mourayan to be all set
for the Derrinstown Derby Trial after
his promising reappearance run.
The trainer said: "He's in good form,
so we should learn a bit. It will be a
little bit of a re-run of the Ballysax
Stakes with Fame And Glory, if that's
the one Aidan (O'Brien) runs.
"He could have a couple of good
competitors there, but we like our
horse and he's come on nicely."
![]()
Bolger has key to 1000
Jim Bolger is responsible for six of 18
possibles for Sunday's Derrinstown Stud
1000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown.
The Coolcullen trainer, who has won it
four times since 1994, has entered
Aaroness, Blas Ceoil, Buiochas Mor,
Duaisbhanna, Maidin Maith and Oh
Goodness Me for the Group 3 heat.
Empress of France and Totally Devoted
could represent Aidan O'Brien, while
Baliyana is John Oxx's only hope.

Derby picture to clear
Johnny Murtagh believes Aidan O'Brien's
squad for the Derby will become much
clearer over the next fortnight.
The likes of Fame And Glory, Age Of
Aquarius and Masterofthehorse are all
likely to run in the coming days.
Murtagh said: "With Chester, Lingfield
and York, the picture will be clearer.
We have a lot of unexposed 3yos, and
Mastercraftsman and Fame And Glory who
were Group One winners as juveniles."
![]()
Murtagh counts on Yeats
Johnny Murtagh is counting on Yeats to
secure an historic fourth Gold Cup at
Royal Ascot despite the star stayer
suffering a hefty defeat last month.
The big-race jockey said: "He may have
got beaten last time but the ground was
heavy and Aidan (O'Brien) wouldn't have
him 100% ready first time out.
"He will love going back over two and a
half miles at Royal Ascot. He has been
there three times before."
Inca's career over
Trainer Colm Murphy has hailed Brave
Inca as "one in a million" after
announcing the retirement of the 2006
Champion Hurdle winner.
Connections have decided to call time
on the popular 11yo's career following
a below-par run at Punchestown.
Murphy said: "It was a tough decision
to make, but after speaking to everyone
I think it was the right thing to do.
He's been one in a million."
![]()
Cheltenham highlights
Colm Murphy recalled "fantastic days"
with Brave Inca after announcing the
former champion's retirement.
The trainer said: "Cheltenham provided
us with some of the highlights. Winning
the Supreme Novices' was special as it
was the first time for us, and the
Champion Hurdle there was incredible.
"To win the Irish (Champion Hurdle)
this year was beyond our wildest
dreams. What a fantastic horse."
![]()
Retirement at home
Colm Murphy expects popular former
Champion Hurdle winner Brave Inca to
spend his retirement at his County
Wexford stables.
The trainer said: "I've not spoken to
the owners yet, but I would imagine
he'd stay here.
"He's been some servant to us. But
after the last day, we know he's had
his fair share of little problems and
all the wear and tear."
Manning thrilled
Kevin Manning has expressed delight at
the performances of Gan Amhras and Cuis
Ghaire in their respective Guineas.
Both Jim Bolger-trained 3yos finished
in the money at HQ, with Gan Amhras
third in the 2000 Guineas and Cuis
Ghaire second to Ghanaati in the 1000.
The jockey said: "I was pleased with
both of them. Gan Amhras ran a very
good race. When he steps up to a mile
and a half he'll come into his own."
More to come from Cuis
Jockey Kevin Manning believes Cuis
Ghaire has an exciting future ahead of
her following a fine second to Ghanaati
in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket.
Manning told At The Races: "I think
she'll improve for the run and there is
a good bit more to come from her.
"She's handled decent ground very well.
She's very light on her feet and she's
got plenty of pace and I think she'll
be going for the Irish Guineas."
Lah likely for Curragh
Mick Channon is likely to aim Lahaleeb
at the Irish 1000 Guineas at the
Curragh after she failed to show her
true form on fast ground at Newmarket.
The Dubai Duty Free winner was never
travelling under Darryll Holland and
finished 10th in the HQ Classic.
Channon told his website: "I won't
totally put it down to the ground, but
that didn't help. She'll probably go
for the Irish Guineas at the Curragh."
