Lay of the day
Lay of the day (3.05 Haydock) The last two 3yos to try to win this race both finished stone last, so though City Style is classy, he has a tough task up against his elders. Likely longshot (1.55 Haydock) A change of tactics worked the oracle on Toshi last time and he could be up to defying a 12lb higher mark for his Bangor success with another bold display from the front in this. Longest traveller (3.45 Lingfield) Sabana Perdida won this race for France last year and Gallic hopes are pinned on Chasing Stars this time, who signed off last season with a Listed success. Trainer trends (7.55 Warwick) Eve Johnson Houghton has saddled Phluke to victory in this race in each of the last two years and the veteran mil2/7 tries to make it a third success off a 5lb lower mark than 12 months ago. Deja vu (2.15 Ascot) Zaahid won this race last year after running in the Spring Cup and will be expected to make his presence felt after a similar preparation this term. Drop in class (1.20 Haydock) Ogee was last seen winning the Grade 1 Sefton Novices' Hurdle at Aintree and though he has to give weight to so3/7 experienced rivals, there's no doubting he has the class to figure in this. Moving house (4.50 Haydock) Hamoody returns to Peter Chapple-Hyam after an unsuccessful stint in America and looks to have been found a decent opportunity if he retains his ability. Perfect partners (2004-2009) Ahmed Ajtebi has four wins from just seven rides for David Nicholls and he is on Striking Spirit in Ascot's 44/7. Unsuccessful for Barry Hills last term, he has joined a crack sprinting yard. Top strikers (2004-2009) Jeremy Noseda has a formidable record at Lingfield and he saddles Fleeting Star in the 2.10. A comfortable winner over 6f last summer, she has every chance if fully fit on her return. William Haggas does well with his runners at Ascot and he is represented by Basque Beauty in the 1.40. The 4yo won on her reappearance over this 5/7 course and distance last year and has every chance despite top weight. It all points to ... (3.45 Lingfield) Chasing Stars collected her third success of the season when landing a Listed race at Saint-Cloud and Criquette Head-Maarek's filly could strike. The 4yo ran well on her reappearance last year and a similar effort would put her in contention. Anagram ace Sin sulky babe (runs at Ascot) Friday's solution: Doctor Parkes Saturday's Selections Make Midday the pick Midday ran a cracker when second against colts in the Blue Riband Trial at Epsom and can go one better in the Oaks Trial at Lingfield (2.40). Henry Cecil's 3yo signed off last season with fourth in a Listed race at Newmarket and looked to have improved again when second at Epsom. The Oasis Dream filly allayed any stamina fears when staying on well in that race she looks likely to figure. Aquarius can reign Age Of Aquarius looks another member of Aidan O'Brien's top-drawer batallion and he looks capable of taking the Derby Trial at Lingfield (3.15). A winner on the all-weather on his debut at Dundalk, the Galileo colt was fourth in a Group 1 at Saint-Cloud won by stablemate Fame And Glory. That colt has franked the form in some style and Age Of Aquarius can book his ticket to Epsom in this contest. Vitz a 7f specialist Vitznau (nap) seems at his very best over 7f, so the way he finished over 6f at Doncaster last time gives plenty of hope for Haydock's 3.05. Richard Hannon's charge missed out by a head in Listed company at Wolverhampton in March, before staying on strongly for fourth in the Cammidge Trophy. Back to his ideal trip on his favoured forecast ground, the 5yo looks lilkely to end a year-long losing run. Saturday's selections Lingfield 2.40 Midday 3.15 Age Of Aquarius Haydock 3.05 Vitznau (nap)
Spots the horses to follow Chester, Thursday: Staying On ran a brave race in the Huxley Stakes and he could make up into a smart Group-race performer. The 4yo tried to make all and rallied throughout the closing stages to be beaten just a short head. Chester, Wednesday: Changingoftheguard ran a nice race for second in the 10f maiden. He pulled over 3l clear of the third on his first start for 191 days, and it will be no surprise to see him in Pattern company in the future.
Connections of impressive Chester winner Harbinger are in no rush to make a decision over his participation in the Investec Derby. Harbinger's Sir Michael Stoute stable companion Doctor Fremantle is set for a step back up in trip following his Huxley Stakes success on the Roodee. Ladbrokes Sprint Cup winner African Rose is set to make her seasonal debut at Longchamp later this month, with Royal Ascot the plan after that. Owner Sir Robert Ogden is looking forward to seeing Sans Frontieres put his Classic credentials on the line in the Dante Stakes at York on Thursday. Saturday's Scoop6 races are divided between Haydock, Lingfield, Ascot and Nottingham, with 95,207 in the win fund and 40,803 in the bonus pot. The Scoop6 races are: 1. 1.55 Haydock, 2. 2.10 Lingfield, 3. 2.15 Ascot, 4. 2.25 Nottingham, 5. 3.05 Haydock, 6. 3.45 Lingfield
Red-hot Dante Thursday's totesport Dante Stakes at York has the look of one of the most informative Derby trials for years. The likes of Racing Post Trophy winner Crowded House and Craven runner-up Sans Frontieres are likely contenders, while Free Agent and Redwood could line up. Aidan O'Brien's exciting pair of Black Bear Island and Freemantle also appear among 15 entries, along with Kite Wood from the Godolphin operation. Kite in flying form It has been a few years now since Godolphin had a genuine Classic contender but the team have high hopes that could all change with Kite Wood. Trainer Saeed bin Suroor said of the Dante hopeful: "He is improving all the time. Physically he looks better and better since he first arrived with us. "It will be interesting to see how he runs. I like this horse a lot and I think he will achieve something good." Sar stepping up Michael Bell's promising Sariska is among a field of 10 for Wednesday's Tattersalls Musidora Stakes at York. An eyecatching winner of an HQ maiden on her debut, she suffered trouble in running when fourth on her seasonal return in the Fred Darling at Newbury. Bell said: "We're taking this route as we always thought she was more of an Oaks filly. She's an imposing filly and will be more comfortable over further." Conditions ideal for Age Johnny Murtagh believes conditions will be ideal for Age Of Aquarius in the Derby Trial Stakes at Lingfield. The Dundalk maiden winner signed off his juvenile campaign with a fine fourth in top-class company and resumes in the Group 3 heat. Murtagh said: "He is a lovely big horse and was fourth to (stablemate) Fame And Glory in a Group One last autumn. Fast ground will be ideal." Improving with time Henry Cecil's Father Time bids to regain the winning thread in the Lingfield Derby Trial having finished third on his reappearance at Newbury. Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to owner Khalid Abdullah, said: "I think Father Time has come on both mentally and physically since Newbury." Cecil added: "I am expecting him to run very well. I'd really be disappointed if he wasn't in the first two." Al all potential John Gosden's Alwaary has some promising form and connections hope Lingfield's Derby Trial will give them an idea of his true ability. Angus Gold, owner Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum's racing manager, said: "He is a horse of some potential. "John is satisfied with his work rather than ecstatic, but maybe he is just going through the motions at home a little bit." Anice Oaks trial Ralph Beckett sends out his third successive runner in Lingfield's Oaks Trial, with Anice Stellato representing the stable this time. Beckett won with Kayah in 2007 and narrowly missed out with subsequent Oaks heroine Look Here 12 months ago. He said: "We've fond memories of this race. She's a nice filly, she was quite an edgy filly last year, but she has grown up and changed quite a lot." Tottie returns in Trial Tottie is reported to have thrived over the winter and trainer Amanda Perrett believes the Lingfield Oaks Trial will reflect the filly's progress. Perrett said: "We will find out a lot more about her on Saturday, but our filly had a very good winter. "Any rain would be welcome as she has never run on ground this quick, but Lingfield are usually very good at providing nice safe ground." Floodlit up for Trial John Gosden saddles the Cheveley Park Stud-owned Floodlit in the Listed Oaks Trial at Lingfield Park. Chris Richardson, racing manager to the owners, said: "We've got a number of nice fillies that we don't quite know where we stand with them and we are just going to have a look. "The fact John thinks she is ready for a race of this nature has to give us a bit of encouragement." Mid at top of her game Midday, who won a Newmarket maiden, pushed Debussy hard on her return in the Blue Riband Trial at Epsom and runs in Lingfield's Oaks Trial. Her conqueror went on to deliver a decent third in the Chester Vase and trainer Henry Cecil reported: "Like Father Time in the Derby Trial, I expect her to run very well. "It wasn't ideal to run against the colts at Epsom - it was a good effort." Sky up for Cup Godolphin's string have been slow to kick into gear this season but Blue Sky Basin will be aiming to give the team a welcome boost in Ascot's Victoria Cup. The 4yo got back to winning ways on his last start at Jebel Ali and though he makes his debut for Godolphin, Ahmed Ajtebi keeps the ride. Trainer Saeed bin Suroor said: "We are looking to see a good run from him. Ahmed knows the horse well." Zaahid defending Cup Last year's winner Zaahid is back to defend his totesport Victoria Cup crown for Barry Hills off a 6lb higher mark. Still an entire, the 5yo finished second behind Expresso Star in the Lincoln first time out this year but disappointed in the Spring Cup. Owner Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum's racing manager Angus Gold said: "He's a good old horse so we'll see. I just hope it is not too firm." Burke keen on Bay bid Karl Burke is not too concerned about impressive Ascot winner Trafalgar Bay stepping back in distance for the totesport Victoria Cup. The 6yo returned to form last week over 1m and is one of 29 runners in the 7f handicap at the Berkshire venue. Burke told At The Races: "He's gone back up 8lb but we take 5lb off him with Martin Lane. It (the trip) shouldn't bother him." Trip of no concern Connections of the Sir Mark Prescott- trained Prescription are confident the step up to 7f will not be a problem in the Victoria Cup at Ascot. Chris Richardson, racing manager for owners Cheveley Park Stud, said: "The extra furlong shouldn't be a problem." Prescott added: "She's in good form and she could only run on soft ground last season because that is what it was at the time. Faster ground is an unknown." High and mighty High-Rise became the eighth horse to go on to Derby glory after winning the Lingfield Trial when he took the Epsom prize for Luca Cumani in 1998. That was the last time the Lingfield race has pointed to the Derby hero, but it remains an important test. In fact last year's winner Alessandro Volta played a key part in the outcome of the Irish Derby, if only for his wayward path in the closing stages. Date with destiny April The Fifth, who was trained by well-known actor Tom Walls, won the inaugural Lingfield Derby Trial in 1932 and followed up in the Derby itself. It established a path subsequently trodden by Mid-Day Sun in 1937, Tulyar in 1952 and Parthia in 1959. During that period other top horses won the race, though they did not go on to Epsom glory - the likes of Sayajirao, Black Tarquin, Aureole and Alcide. Footsteps of a superstar Meadowville won the Lingfield Derby Trial in 1970 but had the misfortune to be foaled in the same year as Nijinsky. The colt finished second to Vincent O'Brien's champion in the Irish Derby and filled the same spot when he landed the Triple Crown in the St Leger. Lester Piggott, on board Nijinsky that day, landed a Lingfield Trial on a subsequent Derby hero when Teenoso took both races in the 1983 season. Simply the best The best winner of the Lingfield Derby Trial in the last 50 years may not have been a subsequent Epsom scorer at all. A case can be made out for 1974 winner Bustino, who landed the St Leger and became a top-class 4yo, securing his place in racing history in the process. It was, of course, Bustino who emerged the valiant loser from that epic King George against Grundy, well known as one of the century's greatest contests. More glory to come? The last three Lingfield Derby Trial winners to go on to Epsom glory were Slip Anchor, Kahyasi and High-Rise. In recent years the race has lost some of its lustre, with winners who were far from distinguished - Percussionist, for instance, won at Hexham last month. But 2007 scorer Aqaleem finished a very creditable third to Authorized in the Derby, so it pays to take careful note - who knows what will happen this time. Oaks hopes are High Barry Hills has already tasted Classic success this season through Ghanaati in the Guineas and High Heeled could provide him with victory in the Oaks. Like Ghanaati, High Heeled's sole triumph at two came in a Kempton maiden, but there was plenty to like about her reappearance win at Newbury. She saw off some smart colts there, despite the race not being run to suit, and 14/1 with Hills for Epsom is fair. Stars chasing prize Chasing Stars bids to become the second successive French-trained winner of the Group 3 Chartwell Fillies' Stakes. Sabana Perdida took Lingfield's Group 3 prize for Alain de Royer-Dupre 12 months ago and this time Gallic hopes rest on Criquette Head-Maarek's 4yo. The trainer said: "She's a very useful filly. She is improving and could take a place in a Group race like that one. She is very tough." Hannnon double-handed Richard Hannon has two in the Chartwell Fillies' Stakes at Lingfield, with Baileys Cacao and Infamous Angel. The Everleigh trainer said: "Baileys Cacao would have a big chance if she returns to her best. "However, while Ryan Moore rides this one, don't rule out Infamous Angel, who is the mount of William Buick. She will appreciate dropping back in trip as she has plenty of speed." Easter lands Dee South Easter (6/1) came out on top in a thrilling four-way finish to the Dee Stakes at Chester under Neil Callan. Deposer took the field along and tried to kick clear as they turned in, but Gitano Hernando, South Easter and Drumbeat all laid down a challenge. It was the William Haggas inmate who nudged in front and he pulled out more to win by a head when Gitano Hernando made a late lunge for glory. South camp mull Derby Connections of South Easter will consider sending their colt for the Derby following his Dee Stakes win. Trainer William Haggas said: "He's green but he's going to be a nice horse. The part-owner (Bernard Kantor) is the power behind Investec, who now sponsor the Derby. "He's a realist. If it's right for the horse then he'd love to have a crack, but if not he wouldn't dream of it." Placings unaltered John Egan, who rode the runner-up in the Dee Stakes, lodged an objection to the winner South Easter, but the placings remained unaltered. Winning jockey Neil Callan said: "I felt I kept pretty much straight. It got a little bit tight, but my fella has only had the one run. "There's more improvement but the Derby I don't know. We were just a little bit worried about the fast ground as well." Buc sprints to glory A farcical Ormonde Stakes resulted in a second career Group 3 victory for the Andrew Balding-trained Buccellati. The three-runner field crawled for the first circuit and it ultimately turned into a 5f sprint for home. Odds-on favourite Frozen Fire appeared to hate the way the race panned out and trailed home last, with William Buick seeing off Scintillo by 3l on the front-runner Buccellati (15/8). Buick sharp on Buc William Buick admitted to making the best of a bad situation after winning a farcically-run Ormonde Stakes. The jockey said: "I didn't want to make the running under any circumstances to be honest. I thought maybe Johnny Murtagh (Frozen Fire) would go on. "He didn't and we were trotting through the first furlong. When there are three runners and you are making the running you can control the race." Balding eyes Coronation Andrew Balding was delighted after Buccellati made all to win the tactically-run Ormonde Stakes. He said: "That was Plan Z. To be honest I would have fancied him however the race had been run. William (Buick, jockey) had enough sense to take the bull by the horns and we're grateful. "He's in the Coronation Cup and I think that's where we'll go. He'll be better with a bit of cut in the ground." Fire unsuited by pace Odds-on favourite Frozen Fire was last of the three Ormonde Stakes runners after the race was run at a crawl. Jockey Johnny Murtagh said: "I spoke to Aidan (O'Brien, trainer) and he said just drop him in and get him relaxed. "We were only trotting down the back. Probably the way the race was run did not suit my horse. What can I do? Go on, get beaten and disobey all my orders or do what I'm told?"
