Lay of the day
Lay of the day (2.15 Newcastle) Lethal has a really good record at this level, but he has done all of his winning on sound surfaces or the all- weather and won't enjoy the ground. Likely longshot (3.00 Kempton) C&D winner Megalala failed to beat a rival home on his seasonal bow but he's down in the weights as a result and could spring a surprise if able to regain his best form. Longest traveller (5.15 Newcastle) Sir Mark Prescott sends Speed Dating from his Newmarket base up to Newcastle for the 3yo's handicap debut. The son of Pivotal didn't show much last season but he steps up to 1m now and his mark of 59 could prove to be a lenient one. Trainer trends (4.10 Warwick) William Haggas has won this race a couple of times in recent years and has Storming Sioux this time. Deja vu (2.50 Beverley) Snowed Under won this race 12 months ago and although burdened with top weight here, it's fair to expect plenty of improvement from his recent hurdling debut effort at Kelso. Drop in class (4.55 Windsor) Theocritus trailed home last of 20 in an Epsom handicap last month but t3/7 looks a far more realistic assignment and he shouldn't be underestimated. Perfect partners (2004-2009) Shane Kelly and Jeremy Noseda have a good record when combining and they have Paradise Dream in Kempton's 2.00. The 110,000-guineas purchase already has some fancy entries to his name. George Baker has a tidy strike-rate when riding for David Elsworth and he partnered the trainer's Sonning Gate to victory twice last season. Last mo4/7's run was no disgrace and he's an interesting prospect at Windsor (3.55). Top strikers (2004-2009) Peter Chapple-Hyam boasts an excellent record at Warwick and saddles Maxwell Hawke in the 3.40. The twice-raced 3yo was a ready winner over this C&D on his seasonal bow and can defy a mark of 80. Richard Fahey bangs in plenty of winners at Beverley and has a likely type in the 3.20 in the shape of Handsome Falcon. He's sure to stri5/7 fitter for his comeback run and he doesn't seem badly treated at present. It all points to ... (3.55 Windsor) Sonning Gate fared well enough giving weight away on his seasonal return in a conditions race last month and should be sharper for the run. He steps into the handicap ranks here and although not glaringly well-treated off a mark of 88, it might not be beyond him. Anagram ace A father chicane (runs at Newcastle) Sunday's solution: Cross The Line Sloop to swoop Sloop Johnb made a good impression on his return to action and looks set to go one better in the 2.20 at Beverley. Richard Fahey's inmate, a 5f maiden winner at Carlisle last summer, failed to land a blow in two starts at 6f towards the end of last term. However, the drop to 5f saw him finish second at Musselburgh last month and this stiff track - like Carlisle - will suit him down to the ground. Venue to hit target Society Venue has had a few chances now but the handicapper looks to have given him a chance in the 2.50 at Beverley. Still a maiden after 10 starts, Jedd O'Keeffe's charge has shown promise on more than one occasion, not least on his reappearance at Pontefract. He's been eased 2lb for that encouraging third-placed effort and should be able to take full advantage over this longer distance. Molly to motor home Warwick's 3.40 looks an interesting contest and the real eyecatcher is seasonal debutante Glen Molly (nap) from the Barry Hills yard. After a pleasing second to the well- regarded Marine Boy, Glen Molly went one better on her only subsequent start in a Newbury maiden. The form of that race could have worked out better but she scored with a bit in hand and a mark of 78 is workable. ![]()

Diamond can sparkle
Though firmly in the veteran stage
these days, Carte Diamond doesn't have
too many miles on the clock and looks
good each-way value in the Chester Cup.
Brian Ellison's charge has shown a
liking for the Roodee, including when
third to Macarthur in the Ormonde
Stakes at this meeting last year.
The 8yo stayed on well for third at
Lingfield most recently and Victor
Chandler's 33/1 is sorely tempting.
2000 Guineas hero Sea The Stars is the
new favourite for the Derby and is 4/1
from 10/1 with Hills. Stan James are
the same price from 8/1.
Totesport slashed John Oxx's colt to
9/2 from 10s and he also heads their
market, while Paddy Power are less
generous in offering just 3/1.
Stan James were impressed with 2000
Guineas third Gan Amhras and he is 8/1
from 12s for the Derby. Rip Van Winkle
is 8s from 10s with totesport.
Paddy Power have eased Crowded House to
11/2 from 5s for Epsom, while totesport
make Downhiller 8/1 from 10s for the
Chester Cup on Wednesday.

Sea stars in Guineas
The John Oxx-trained Sea The Stars beat
Delegator in the stanjames.com 2000
Guineas at Newmarket.
Mick Kinane was never too far away from
the pacesetting Evasive on the 8/1 shot
but favourite-backers started to cheer
when Delegator cruised into the lead.
Sea The Stars was only just hitting top
gear himself, however, and he stayed on
up the hill better to score by 1½l,
with Gan Amhras back in third.

Bred to be good
Galileo's half-brother Sea The Stars
carried on the family's Classic
tradition by winning the 2000 Guineas.
Trainer John Oxx said: "He quickened
well into the Dip for a relatively
inexperienced horse - the rising ground
suited him and he really got home well.
"Everyone keeps saying he's a Derby
horse, but he is by Cape Cross and
shows a lot of speed - I didn't want to
miss the Guineas."

Derby dreams
Epsom is the next port of call for 2000
Guineas hero Sea The Stars.
Trainer John Oxx said: "The Derby will
be his next race. There is a big debate
whether he will get the trip and there
is always a debate whether a Guineas
winner will get the Derby distance.
"You can read his pedigree either way
and we won't know until the day. There
is a fair chance he will get it, if he
had no chance he wouldn't be running."
![]()
Just like Az
John Oxx compared Sea The Stars
favourably with a past stable star
following his 2000 Guineas triumph.
He said: "I am delighted with him. He
is a horse with a big future. He has
everything - speed, temperament, size
and strength.
"He is just like Azamour. He has such a
presence in the yard and horses like
him get you out of bed in the morning.
This means an awful lot."

Arazan stays home
With 2000 Guineas winner Sea The Stars
heading for the Derby, John Oxx has an
able deputy for the Curragh.
The handler said: "We had two good
horses for the race, Arazan and Sea The
Stars, and we fancied them both to be
in the frame had they both turned up.
"We left the other horse at home as we
didn't want to run him on fast ground
at this stage, and he will go for the
Irish 2000 Guineas."
![]()
Big-race rider
Mick Kinane enjoyed his fourth success
in the 2000 Guineas when Sea The Stars
proved too good for Delegator in the
first Classic of the season.
The Irish ace said: "He's a classy
horse and we've waited for him all
winter. We had a setback five weeks
ago, but, luckily, we were well ahead
of schedule."
Kinane added: "He's always been crying
out for this ground."
![]()
Excited about Epsom
Mick Kinane can't wait until he is
reacquainted with Sea The Stars on the
first Saturday in June.
He said: "I always thought whatever he
did last year, this would be his year
and I want to win the Derby on him now.
"I don't know if he'll stay but if he
does he has all the qualities a top
horse must have. He has a great nature
- Epsom won't faze him as an occasion -
and he's going to be a good ride."
![]()
Top family
Guineas winner Sea The Stars is the
latest in a top line of offspring out
of Arc winner Urban Sea.
She was owned by the Hong Kong-based
Tsui family and their racing manager
John Clark said: "Urban Sea died this
year. For the last eight years she was
at the Irish National Stud.
"The family were unable to come today
but this will mean a lot to them, and
they will be coming to Epsom."
![]()
Del gallant in defeat
Brian Meehan was delighted with the
effort put in by Delegator, despite his
defeat to Sea The Stars in Newmarket's
stanjames.com 2000 Guineas.
The trainer only gave the favourite the
green light to run after walking the
track prior to the start of racing.
He said: "I'd say the ground was just a
little too firm for him. It hasn't
quite happened - but he's run a cracker
against two very good horses."
![]()
Gan goes for Derby
Jim Bolger will gear Gan Amhras towards
the Derby at Epsom after his valiant
third in the 2000 Guineas.
The County Carlow trainer revealed:
"Kevin Manning is certain he'll be
suited by going a bit further - that
was a Derby trial."
The jockey added: "He ran a super race
and will improve hand over fist,
especially with a step up in trip which
he will get in the Derby."
![]()
Rip not disgraced
Rip Van Winkle finished one place ahead
of stablemate Mastercraftsman when
fourth in the 2000 Guineas.
Johnny Murtagh said of the former:
"When they quickened up, I had to
switch him across. He's just been
tapped for a little toe, but I'm really
happy with the way he's run."
Trainer Aidan O'Brien added: "They have
both run great for the their first runs
of the year."

Cannon conquers Casual
Bronze Cannon claimed the scalp of dual
Derby placegetter Casual Conquest in
Newmarket's Jockey Club Stakes.
The task of Dermot Weld's favourite
should have been made easier when his
chief rival Spanish Moon was withdrawn
after refusing to enter the stalls.
But he may not have acted on the ground
and when Bronze Cannon (7/1) took over
from Drill Sergeant, Casual Conquest
laboured and finished 3l adrift.
![]()
Genuine Bronze
While Casual Conquest and Spanish Moon
played up in the stalls, Bronze Cannon
was on his best behaviour to claim the
spoils in the Jockey Club Stakes.
Trainer John Gosden said: "What
happened down at the start was
unfortunate, but it has played into our
hands on this occasion.
"When the other horse (Casual Conquest)
came breathing down his neck, he's
found more - and full credit to him."
![]()
Weld keeps faith
Dermot Weld was not too downbeat after
Casual Conquest could only manage
second behind Bronze Cannon in the
Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket.
The Irish handler said: "He's run a
good race, but as I've said beforehand,
he was ring-rusty.
"The ground is good, safe ground, but
may just be on the fast side for him at
the moment. We'll now take each day as
it comes."

Amour a proper horse
Amour Propre could take a big hand in
the major sprints this season, judging
by his impressive victory in the Group
3 Palace House Stakes at Newmarket.
Henry Candy's 3yo had a penalty to
carry for his Cornwallis success last
term, but raced close to the pace set
by Riveaulx World and kicked on 2f out.
Hoh Hoh Hoh and Borderlescott gave
chase, but never threatened the 7/1
winner, who prevailed by a cosy 2½l.
![]()
Over lies in wait
A clash with Hungarian superstar
Overdose is on the cards for Palace
House Stakes winner Amour Propre.
Trainer Henry Candy said: "He was very
impressive, and it's nice to know that
he doesn't have to make all the running
- he did it the sensible way.
"He'll go anywhere the ground is fast
but wherever we go, the 'Budapest
Bullet' is likely to be in our way.
We'll have a try at the Temple Stakes."

Pal up to task
Your Old Pal put a Newbury defeat
behind him with a gritty display in the
Sights kept low
Your Old Pal is unlikely to take his
chance in a Classic, despite winning a
recognised trial in the Listed
Newmarket Stakes at Headquarters.
Winning trainer Jeremy Noseda admitted:
"He stuck his neck out and it was a
good performance.
"We will have to discuss it, but I
think we will probably look at the King
Edward VII Stakes or the mile-and-a-
quarter Listed race at Royal Ascot."

Jumbo claims big prize
Jumbo Rio got the better of Mourad in
the Ballymore Champion Four Year Old
Hurdle at Punchestown.
The latter was sent off the 11/10
favourite following his Trimph Hurdle
third, but Jumbo Rio was in a better
position to capitalise after long-time
leader Tharawaat fell at the last.
Andrew McNamara produced the 5/2 winner
at the right time and held on by 4l
from the fast-finishing runner-up.

Rio back to best
Jumbo Rio proved his Triumph Hurdle
running all wrong when claiming
top-level honours at Punchestown.
Trainer Edward O'Grady said: "He will
make a very good horse in time. Things
didn't go right for him in Cheltenham -
he got kicked at the start and Ebadiyan
didn't help when he ran out.
"He did a nice bit of work before he
came here and he was lucky the faller
(Tharawaat) didn't take him out."

DREAM EATER: Second at Sandown on
Saturday. Andrew Balding, trainer,
says:
"I'm delighted with the run and it has

Boy proves he stays
Horses recently nominated by
connections as ones to look out for:
PACO BOY: Winner at Sandown on
Saturday. Richard Hannon jnr, assistant
trainer, says:
"That will have put him spot on for the
Lockinge and the Newbury mile is not as
hard to get as the Sandown mile as it's
a stiff climb in the last 100 yards
here."

Horses recently nominated by

Sir Michael Stoute, trainer, says:
"This horse stays very well, as he

the track as well. That (the Gold Cup)
would be the plan, definitely. He is in
the Yorkshire Cup and the Henry II and
hopefully he will have another run

definitely step up to six furlongs next
time and the Coventry is the plan."

Black type ambitions
Horses recently nominated by

STAR RUBY: Winner at Sandown on Friday.
Peter Chapple-Hyam, trainer, says:
"She is not in any of the big races but

Royal Ascot) next week and hopefully
she can pick up some black type through
the season."

the big sprint handicaps for him
again."
